Arts and Industry Open Studios

I went over to the Arts and Industry open studios this afternoon hoping to find some art. The building is like a maze, but I discovered that if I just kept walking on each floor until I had seen everything, I could walk up a staircase at one end and then work my way to the other end. One gallery had an abstract oil painting that I really liked, but it someone else had already purchased it. I found out that the buyer was none other than Matthias Leutrum, who had a recent exhibition of his cannonball paintings at APE Gallery in Northampton.

I discovered a really cool metal workshop in the basement. There were some incredible sculptures–I’m not sure if you would call them steampunk or something similar, but they were really interesting. One was of a electric chair with all sorts of metal attachments (kind of like a Terry Gilliam film). They were by Sam Ostroff.

Then I found the studio of Chris Millette. He had a giant woodcut of a buffalo hanging on the wall. It was very cool. He also had some other woodcuts, one of a fungus that was nice. I ended up getting a smaller print of the buffalo and two drawings.

I didn’t find anything else that I liked in my price range so I called it a day.

Here’s a picture of Maybelline.

I’m working on a new series of paintings – small acrylics. I am going to wait until the are all done before I post images of them, so that I can make a series of posts every other day to reveal the complete series.

Trip to NYC

Heather and I went to NYC yesterday. Our first stop was Zibetto for the best latte on the island.

Next we went over to Bernarducci Meisel gallery on 57th Street to look at the photorealist paintings. We saw Rey Milici’s new painting of the Hadley sugar Shack (we used to live right down the road from there so it was a nice surprise). We also saw some of his new watercolors.

Next we went to the International Print Fair where we spent a long time looking at a variety of prints. One item that caught my art was an original copy of “Holy Cats” by Andy Warhol’s Mother. It was only $10,000.

After the print fair we went to our favorite restaurant in New York – the Candle Cafe on Lexington Ave.

After lunch we went over to the MET where we spent time looking at the vast collections.
